DESCRIPTION:

Under general direction, performs skilled tasks in repairing and/or performing preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment, performs related work as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Performs general repair work on all motorized equipment, including automobiles, trucks, tractors, mowers, small-motor equipment, and specialized maintenance/construction equipment.
  • Talks with operators, uses specialized diagnostic equipment, and/or performs road tests to determine defects in vehicles and equipment; makes repairs; checks repair work before vehicle and/or equipment is placed back into service.
  • Performs tune-ups, major and minor repairs, minor rebuilding, and routine preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
  • Installs specialized equipment in vehicles and equipment.
  • May perform minor body work.
  • Makes welding repairs on equipment.
  • Repairs hydraulic equipment.
  • Checks oil and fluids in vehicles and equipment.
  • Changes light automotive, heavy equipment, and heavy truck tires.
  • Assists with maintaining adequate inventory of materials, tools and spare parts.
  • Assists with preparing and maintaining accurate records on all vehicles and equipment to ensure servicing at proper intervals and to determine maintenance costs for each piece of equipment.
  • Maintains garage in clean, orderly fashion.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent – required.
  • Driver’s License - required.
  • Three years directly related work experience – preferred.
  • Completion of mechanic training in vocational school - preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge:

  • Extensive knowledge of the standard practices and equipment used in the automotive mechanic trade.
  • Knowledge of departmental rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of the geography of the city.
  • Knowledge of first-aid.
  • Knowledge of preventive maintenance requirements for vehicle and equipment.

Abilities:

  • Ability to diagnose and repair, or supervise the repair of, city owned vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain files on repair work for each vehicle and/or piece of equipment, inventory of spare parts, and activity report.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with other city employees.
  • Possess mechanical aptitude, manual dexterity and good physical condition.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Instructions - Somewhat general; many aspects of work are covered specifically, but must also use some of own judgment.

Processes - Work varies slightly and seldom required to take different, new or unusual approaches in completing job duties.

Review of Work - Most or all of completed work is reviewed.

Analytical Requirements - Decisions are based on wide knowledge and applications of advanced techniques/concepts are required.

Physical Demands - Work is primarily indoors in a non-airconditioned environment; must test vehicles and equipment outdoors regardless of weather conditions; must lift heavy objects (more than 50 pounds); must operate vehicle and equipment; exposed to machinery and its moving parts; exposed to high places, confined spaces; exposed to fumes, chemicals and toxic substances as a requirement of the job; must have good use of hands and arms; must be able to walk, stoop, bend, squat, crawl; ability to see, listen, speak and understand.

Tools and/or Equipment Uses - Hand tools, special tools, welding equipment, torches, grinders, lifting equipment, service truck; normal office equipment (telephone, fax, etc.).

Contacts - Regular contacts with other city officers and employees; occasional contacts with public.

Confidential Information - Little or no use of confidential information.

Must possess and maintain a valid commercial driver’s license.

Must be able to respond to calls in emergency situations at all hours.

Must successfully complete required annual training.

Non-exempt.
